Meeting House & other fund-raising appeals

Barmoor Centenary Project

Barmoor is a unique house set in the heart of the North York Moors.  It offers simple, self-catering accommodation at affordable prices.  For over 100 years it has provided an inspiring and relaxing place for people to share a sense of community, and enjoy contact with the wild nature of the moors.

The project is to upgrade the facilities and create extra space making the house more welcoming to larger parties and available for use throughout the year.

The target is to raise £100,000 by summer 2012.

For further details, or to make contributions, contact Megan Rowlands, Flat 26, Elba, Gotts Road, Leeds, LS12 1DD

The Meeting is small, but thriving, with about 40 members.  Its foundation derives from some of the early followers of George Fox.  The stone Meeting House has a burial ground at the rear, dating back at least to 1691, which is now an attractive, peaceful garden, open to the public.

Airton QMH Renovation Appeal - Target Achieved

The grade II listed Meeting House, garden & other buildings at Airton have been in Friends' ownership since the late 17th century.
A small Meeting for Worship was reinstated in 2004 and was growing despite the poor state of repair of the buildings and inadequate facilities. The Meeting had ambitious plans to restore the Meeting house to a structurally, sound, dry and comfortable condition, without losing its historic beauty, and also to refurbish the upstairs of the Stable Block as a hostel for small-group bookings.  They were seeking £333,000 and are thankful to everyone who contributed towards meeting this.

A new Resident Friend, Ursla Bowyer, takes up residence in January 2011 and the hostel/barn is expected to re-open in March 2011, with an official reopening celebration on 1st May. The revamped barn will have 6 hostel bunk spaces plus space for about 14 people to sleep on the floor. We would like to emphasize its potential for daytime and evening events, including visits, meetings and retreats by Quaker groups. In addition to the oldest extant Quaker meeting house (in use by 1658), it will have disabled-accessible meeting rooms, kitchens, library and wc's

The school needs support now because of changes in Government policy relating to special needs inclusion which means that many local authorities now find it much harder to place pupils at Breckenbrough.  The school needs to:

  • Publicise the success of the school more widely
  • Support parents whose children are struggling to obtain placements
